Laminate flooring shopping list: boards, underlay and finishing pieces
Enough packs to cover the floor do not make a complete flooring order. Build a separate line for each layer, edge and transition, then choose tools that suit the exact flooring system.
Start with the product and a room sketch
Record the room dimensions, alcoves, doorways and fixed obstacles before calculating packs. Then record the selected flooring model, board dimensions, coverage per pack and installation method. A product change can alter the pack count and the installation requirements even if the room stays the same.
Use the laminate calculator to separate the measured area, selected cutting allowance and whole-pack order. For several rooms using the same floor or an L-shaped area, choose 2 or 3 rectangular areas and enter non-overlapping rectangles. Keep both area 3 dimensions at 0 when unused. The tool combines the areas before applying the allowance and rounding.
Keep your original measurements so you can recalculate with another pack size. Do not start a new estimate from the rounded coverage of the previous order. A shared order does not prove that cuts can be reused across rooms; check the layout and installation instructions.
Give each part of the project its own line
| Component | Measure or record | Decision before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate boards | Net floor area, layout allowance and pack coverage | Exact model and pack size |
| Underlay | Area and roll or pack coverage | Whether separate underlay is permitted and required |
| Moisture-control layer | Subfloor and flooring system requirements | Specified product, joints and treatment of edges |
| Skirting / baseboards | Individual wall runs minus omitted sections | Profile, lengths and cutting plan |
| Doorway transitions | Each doorway and change of level or material | Compatible profile and fixing method |
| Installation tools | The manufacturer’s installation sequence | Permitted block, pull bar, spacers and cutting method |
An underlay calculation only estimates a quantity. It does not establish acoustic, moisture or heating compatibility. Likewise, a skirting length does not specify a permitted expansion gap. Confirm those details in the instructions supplied with the chosen floor.
Worked example: a room with one doorway
Consider a rectangular room measuring 4 m by 3 m, with one doorway 0.9 m wide. For this example, select an 8% cutting allowance and flooring packs covering 2.2 m². Assume no other alcoves or omitted wall runs.
| Quantity | Working | Example result |
|---|---|---|
| Floor area | 4 × 3 | 12 m² |
| Flooring including allowance | 12 × 1.08 | 12.96 m² |
| Whole flooring packs | Round up 12.96 ÷ 2.2 | 6 packs |
| Coverage purchased | 6 × 2.2 | 13.2 m² |
| Skirting run before cuts | 2 × (4 + 3) − 0.9 | 13.1 m |
The 1.2 m² above the measured floor includes 0.96 m² of selected cutting allowance and 0.24 m² from pack rounding. It is not a promise that 1.2 m² of intact spare boards will remain. If you choose one extra unopened repair pack in the calculator, this example becomes seven packs / 15.4 m²: six for installation and one separate 2.2 m² reserve.
Do not use 13.2 m² as the room area for every other material. If underlay is needed, start from the 12 m² floor and use that product’s roll layout and allowance. For skirting, start with individual wall lengths: a total of 13.1 m alone cannot prove that a particular set of stock lengths will provide all the cuts.
Compare replacement products from the unrounded requirement
Suppose the selected floor is unavailable and a substitute covers 1.8 m² per pack instead of 2.2 m². Keep the 12 m² room and the example 8% allowance, giving 12.96 m² before packs. Replacing six packs with six packs would provide only 10.8 m², which does not even cover the measured floor.
| Coverage per pack | Required packs | Coverage purchased |
|---|---|---|
| 2.2 m² | Round up 12.96 ÷ 2.2 = 6 | 13.2 m² |
| 1.8 m² | Round up 12.96 ÷ 1.8 = 8 | 14.4 m² |
Compare the full order cost: six times the first pack price versus eight times the replacement pack price, plus any different underlay or finishing components. A lower price per pack does not by itself make the replacement cheaper.
This comparison changes pack coverage only. If the substitute also changes board dimensions, locking system or installation direction, revisit the layout and allowance. A pack-area calculation cannot check the width of the final row, the pattern of end joints or whether every offcut can be reused. Work those details through with the installation instructions before ordering.
Check underlay before buying it
Confirm whether your selected boards have an attached pad and what the manufacturer allows beneath them. Extra layers are not automatically an upgrade. The subfloor, moisture conditions and any underfloor heating can change the permitted system. Read the installation instructions for the exact product and market.
If separate underlay is specified, use the underlay calculator with its actual coverage. Record tape or other joint accessories separately when the system calls for them. Do not confuse a material’s square-metre coverage with proof that it fulfils the required moisture-control function.
Choose an installation kit by compatibility
A tapping block, pull bar and spacers have different jobs. The block protects the board edge when the instructions permit tapping; a pull bar helps work near an edge where access is limited; spacers help maintain the specified perimeter clearance. These are categories to check, not permission to strike every locking system.
Pergo lists system-specific tools on its installation accessories page and links to installation instructions. That illustrates why a generic kit should be checked against the chosen boards. It is not an endorsement of the independent kit linked from OrderEnough.
- Check the shape of the permitted tapping block against the board profile.
- Use the manufacturer’s clearance specification rather than assuming the spacers in a kit set the right gap.
- Confirm the cutting method and suitable blade separately; a small installation kit may not include a cutting tool.
- Reuse compatible tools in good condition. Do not buy a second tape measure simply because it appears in a list.
Check edges and transitions before checkout
Walk the room boundary and mark every place the floor meets a doorway, another floor, a pipe or a fixed obstruction. Record the profile or detail required at each location. Doorway transitions are counted and measured individually, not bought as a percentage of the floor area.
Use the skirting / baseboard calculator for stock lengths, then check those lengths against a cutting plan. Before checkout, compare the selected products, finishes, pack sizes and delivery dates with your written list. Keep quantities and product requirements together so an apparently cheaper substitution does not leave out a necessary component.
Return to the laminate calculator’s optional tools and order checks or use the room measurement guide to resolve missing dimensions.
